Alright, guys, I can’t do it anymore. I can’t pretend that I’m above the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. I just love shopping it! While this year isn’t my favorite, I still found a handful of things that I’m excited to add to my closet. I didn’t buy anything totally outside the box, but I found a few more basics (some with a slight twist) that I know I’ll wear a lot.
I headed into the store tonight to pick up an item I ordered online (basically my favorite service) and obviously had to look around. I also decided to try on some of the items I’ve seen all over Instagram to see if maybe I was missing out on something. Here are some of the pieces I tried, including my verdict on whether or not the “hot” items live up to the hype-
Caslon Long Sleeve Crewneck Tee- This is my version of “basic with a twist.” (I’m very adventurous!) I love the colors in this tee, and it somehow looks different than the other 800 striped shirts I own. / Verdict- Buy it!
Rag and Bone/JEAN Ankle Skinny Jean– Rag & Bone jeans are a popular item every year. These look okay in the photos, but I didn’t feel okay wearing them. For a taller lady (I’m 5’10), I found the rise in the waist to be about 1″ too low, and they felt just a tad too short. Yes, they’re ankle jeans, but they were starting to venture into lower-calf jeans on me. / Verdict- Skip them if you’re tall or carry more weight in your midsection.
Halogen Boiled Wool Blend Drape Front Coat– I swooned over this coat on Kendi, but it wasn’t for me. It actually photographed well here, but it was kind of a mess in person and didn’t drape right on me. Plus, I knew it wasn’t something I would ever reach for. / Verdict- I’m on the fence. It wasn’t terrible, but I just knew it didn’t belong in my closet.
BP. Oversized Waffle Stitch Cardigan– “Oh, I look like your 84-year-old grandfather? Perfect, I’ll take it.” I have to admit I’m feeling a little proud of myself for discovering this cardigan before I realized it was a “sold-out-immediately” type of piece. What can I say? I have an eye for old man fashion that is beloved by millenial women. / Verdict- Buy it! After this weekend, I guarantee that returns will start. Check the website periodically (you can use the link right there!) and hopefully some will pop back up!
Topshop Long Open Front Cardigan– As much as I love old man sweaters, the bulkiness of this one was too much for me. I liked the bubble sleeves at the wrists, but the sizing was odd and added way too much bulk to my already broad shoulders. / Verdict- Skip it, especially if you already have a broad upper body.
Halogen Short Sleeve Ruffle Hem Dress- Looking at this picture, I’d say this dress isn’t doing me any favors- but I swear the photo doesn’t do it justice! It’s actually really cute in person, and I’m a fan of the drop waist style. I actually ended up ordering it in the “Green Multi Floral” print which is brighter and more colorful than this one. I think it’s a great price for a versatile dress like this! / Verdict- Buy it! I like drop waist styles because I feel like they balance out my chest and shoulders without accentuating them.
Thread and Supply Brandon Fleece Jacket– This was, in a word, awful. I am the queen of cozy-bordering-on-frumpy, but this is the piece you buy if you want your grandma to comment that you’ve “been eating really well.” (Oh, only my grandma says things like that?) I’m perplexed by everyone saying it runs large because it didn’t feel like it ran large, but it definitely made me look large. Oh, and don’t even ask about the pullover version. / Verdict- A hard no. I’m thinking this is only meant for people with C cups or under.
I’m currently waiting on the following items to arrive in the mail. I’ll be updating this post as they get here!
Caslon Tie Knot Sweatshirt– This sweatshirt is not that exciting, and yet I was devastated that I missed out on it last year. If I haven’t stated it enough already, I love oversized, comfortable basics. This is pretty much the definition.
Topshop Color Block Knit Pullover– This is the most “out-of-the-box” I got with my purchases, and I blame Liz Adams! She just looks so cute that I had to order it. And a little more color in my life wouldn’t kill me.
Trouvé Rib Funnel Neck Sweater– I’ll be honest- I don’t have high hopes for this. I’m just not confident the neckline is going to work on me, but I loved it on some other bloggers so I figured it was worth a shot.
I obviously gravitated towards sweaters and tees during my shopping thus far, but I’ve got my eye on a few pairs of boots, too. I’ve been on the hunt for a pair of flat booties for years now, but I’ve had a hard time pulling the trigger on anything. I need something with absolutely no heel thanks to my scoliosis/lower back pain, but it can be hard to find flat that isn’t frumpy. This year, I’m liking the Blondo Lanka Waterproof booties (+10 points for being waterproof in anticipation of a Chicago winter) and the TOMS Ella Chelsea Bootie. I’m also looking at a few pairs of over-the-knee boots, including these Blondo Danny Over the Knee Waterproof boots. I bought a pair of over-the-knee boots at Target last year that I love, but I accidentally bought a wide calf version, and they’ve stretched even more. I’ve never bought from the brand Blondo before, but I definitely like the idea of waterproof. I’m also intrigued by the Lucky Brand Yabba Wedge Bootie because I love wedge sandals so much, but I’m skeptical if they’re really that comfortable.
In the past, I’ve spent a good chunk of money on athletic wear, bras, bags, and beauty. This year, I haven’t really looked at those departments because I’m kind of set. I still have my Rebecca Minkoff bag from the sale two years ago that I carry all the time, and my Zella leggings are defying the laws of nature by still looking brand new. I might buy one of the skin care packages from Clinique or Philosophy but only because those are the two brands/products that I use daily. If you’re looking to invest in a good beauty product, I still have my Clarisonic from 5 years ago (crazy!), and I love the t3 hair dryer that I bought last year.
Overall, I stand by my original assertion that the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is best for basics. I shared a post earlier in the week with some of my favorite finds from previous sales, and there are either exact or very similar items included in this year’s sale. I think one of the reasons I’m not finding the sale as exciting this year is because I’ve already bought the items I’d normally gravitate to. I love that this sale has allowed me to build a solid, good quality wardrobe that I really love, and now I have a closet full of items that I’m excited to put on every morning. Since there are so many similar or exact items this year, I made a list of my top 15 favorites with direct links to shop below. Hopefully, it can help you start building a long-term wardrobe, too!
